Description
Deutsch: Deutsches Panzermuseum Munster in Munster (Örtze)
English: A ZF SSG77 manual gearbox with 6 forward speeds and 1 reverse: side covers removed. There was synchromesh on all gears except 1 & R. First fitted to Panzerkampfwagen III Ausführung H and onwards to Ausf. N. It replaced the ill-fated Maybach Variorex SRG 328 145 installed in Panzer III Ausf. E, F & G.[1] In the background is the rear of a Panzer III Ausf. M, designed and built by Mercedes-Benz. The model number (cast into the gearbox casing) can be seen in the very centre of the photo, directly above the central white bolt:
ZF / 51182[2] / Mercedes-Benz insignia / SSG77. This transmission was also installed in various Geschützwagen III/IV self-propelled gun platforms such as the Heuschrecke and Hummel. Preserved at the German Tank Museum (Deutsches Panzermuseum) in Munster (Örtze).
  1. Panzerkampfwagen III Ausf. E, F, G & H (Panzer Tracts 3-2), Panzer Tracts, 2007, ISBN 9780977164394.
  2. This is probably the part number of the casing, another component (not shown) bears the number 51196.
