English: The sign reads: William Jones was the first station master at Flinders Street Station, then known as the Melbourne Terminus.
He was born in Ireland in 1827 and arrived in Melbourne in 1853. As station master, he oversaw the departure of Australia's first ever passenger rail service, from here to Sandridge, on 12 September 1854. Mr Jones lived in the station master's house and worked for the Melbourne & Hobsons Bay Railway.
