English: A newspaper photograph of Patrick Joseph Platts (right) and Detective Senior Sergeant Harry Gilbert Cook entering the Mount Morgan Court of Petty Sessions on 1 April 1954.
This was following Platts' arrest for the murder of Mount Morgan newsagent Andrew Dingwall on 22 March 1954.
The photo was published on the front page of the 2 April 1954 edition of The Morning Bulletin newspaper in Rockhampton, Queensland.
On 19 May 1954, Platts was found guilty by a jury of wilful murder and sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labour and commenced his sentence in Stuart Creek Gaol near Townsville.
However, he escaped with fellow prisoner Stanley Gordon Taylor on 11 June 1955. Platts was recaptured near Prairie, Queensland on 29 June 1955 while Taylor was recaptured near Alpha, Queensland on 14 July 1955.
The escape from the prison by Platts and Taylor led to the Inquiry into Administration of Stuart Creek Gaol which commenced in July 1955 conducted by Thomas Hickey SM. Both Platts and Taylor gave evidence during the inquiry before several recommendations were made at the conclusion of the inquiry in September 1955.
