Polaris (α Ursae Minoris), the Pole Star, is the brightest star in Ursa Minor, so called because it is very close to the North Celestial Pole.
It is a multiple star with five components: α UMi Aa a supergiant with two smaller companions α UMi B and α UMi Ab. In the stellar system are present other two distant components, α UMi C and α UMi D. Polaris A is a low amplitude classical Cepheid variable.
