Summary
DescriptionPond bay near Greatmoor - geograph.org.uk - 485565.jpg |
English: Pond bay near Greatmoor This is part of a medieval pond bay, which was an embankment or dam across a stream, with a sluice to control the level of water in the pond. The purpose of these constructions is not always known. In some cases they were associated with iron-making, in others as fish ponds for religious or manor houses or connected with milling.
In this view looking south with the C road between Shipton Lee and Edgcott behind the camera, is a small pond and to the right the remains of an embankment. There is also another bank at right angles to the first where the camera is. Just before the tree stump is a stream, the River Ray, which is not visible, flowing left to right across the photo. Beyond this is another, larger pond, also not visible, with an embankment to the right. There is a more significant pond bay nearby south of Finemere Wood at grid reference SP723214, which is also on the River Ray but upstream. |
