Summary
DescriptionPortait of Sonam Lhundrup, Buddhist Abbot of the Kingdom of Lo, Philadelphia Museum of Art.jpg |
English: Portait of Sonam Lhundrup, Buddhist Abbot of the Kingdom of Lo, Philadelphia Museum of Art. Description from the museum reads: "Portrait of Sonam Lhundrup, Buddhist Abbot of the Kingdom of Lo. 1500s. Namkha Drag, Tibetan, active 1500s. Made in Nepal (Mustang district). Copper alloy with silver and copper inlay, pigment, cold gold. Purchased with the Stella Kramrisch Fund, 2003-6-1. Sonam Lhundrup was abbot of the Kingdom of Lo, the mountainous region today called Mustang, located in Nepal. He was believed to be an incarnation of Manjushri, the bodhisattva (enlightened being) of Wisdom. In this portrait Sonam Lhundrup's dual identity as bodhisattva and teacher is shown through the objects on the lotus flowers that flank him. From one rises Manjushri's flaming sword that severs ignorance to reach enlightenment, while the other supports a cloth-draped sacred book that represents his role as a teacher. A long inscription around the sculpture's base praises Sonam Lhundrup and the artist's patrons."
