This image is misleading. The demographic ratio of the lowest caste people has been variously estimated to be between 14 to 18% of India's population, for last 50 years. It is currently claimed by some sources to be about 16% of India's population. The large bottom is incorrect. Similarly the second level from the bottom of the pyramid is much smaller than what this figure implies. A correct figure shape may be an inverted pyramid, or inverted egg - assuming you accept that there are only 4 castes. Many claim, and one Indian government's committee found, India to have over 4100 castes!!; they define caste by the social and type of traditional work an individual's ancestors did 100s of years ago. In modern India, most people do not know which one of those 4100 castes they belong to, or how. See wiki article on caste system in India; and [1] Andre Beteille, Caste, Class and Power: Changing Patterns of Stratification in a Tanjore Village (Delhi: Oxford University Press, 1996); and [2] Brochure on Reservation and Concession (New Delhi: Nabhi Publications, (2001) pages 412-438.
