Italiano: Maschera Dyoboli - Sulla testa è seduta una figura femminile; la fronte bombata termina con la linea diritta dell'arcata sopraccigliare sotto la quale stanno gli occhi, rotondi e forati. Il piano del volto di forma triangolare e mento appuntito (deteriorato) è tagliato verticalmente dal setto nasale. Ai lati scendono due trecce spiraliformi che partono da dietro le orecchie sporgenti.
Queste maschere sono diffuse non solo presso i Marka, ma anche fra i Bamana e i Bozo del Mali. Rappresentano una bella donna come si desume dalle fattezze del volto, dall'acconciatura e dall'abbigliamento (il costume del danzatore). Per quanto il significato resti sostanzialmente lo stesso, lo stile può cambiare in modo anche molto deciso da un gruppo all'altro. Queste maschere compaiono spesso a coppie o a gruppi di tre o quattro. Unitamente alla celebrazione della bellezza femminile, queste maschere (indossate da uomini) denunciano anche i difetti delle donne (quelli che appaiono tali da un punto di vista maschile). Questi difetti, come ha evidenziato James Imperato (1994), possono essere visualizzati nella maschera attraverso l'introduzione di corna di antilope, che in quanto elementi animali infrangono l'estetica del corpo umano con elementi di disturbo. Anche i cori che accompagnano la performance della maschera denunciano il comportamento delle donne che respingono neghittosamente i pretendenti in attesa del marito ideale, così disobbedendo ai genitori e finendo per ritrovarsi, una volta sfiorita la loro bellezza, vecchie e sole. |
