Summary

Description
English: Rachel Hull Don (1866–1941) of Dunedin, president of Women's Christian Temperance Union of New Zealand, with a gavel from Kansas - made from a billiard ball and a brevet-handle by a saloon-keeper who closed his business and became a prohibitionist. The gavel was used by Kansas Gov. St John at the legislative Convention to make Kansas go dry. The Kansas Prohibitionists were "trusting the souvenir will bring New Zealand the same or better conditions than Kansas, resulting in saloons being driven from the State." Post Card by Illingsworth Toska Studio of Wanganui. Image from original in WCTU NZ storage unit in Auckland. See more about the gavel in "A Notable Parcel," White Ribbon, Volume 23, Issue 272, 18 February 1918, Page 9 https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/periodicals/WHIRIB19180218.2.23
