Il 9 settembre 1861 il dipinto vinse il Premio Triennale per la pittura all'Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze.

Scrisse Camillo Boito (in Romanticismo storico, p. 335): «Si sente lo scolaro del Ciseri: la composizione riempie troppo la tela, il disegno è tondeggiante e grave; il colore aspro; nella invenzione non v'ha né spirito di storia, né sapore di novità: e nondimeno splendono in quella opera le prime fiamme del genio giovanile, le quali scaldano la freddezza ampollosa dello stile, e l'abilità, meravigliosa per uno scolaro, ma superficiale, dell'esecuzione.»
