Image title	Den Kopf Richtung Himmel gerichtet und die Augen dramatisch nach oben verdreht, zeigt Guido Reni dieägyptische Herrscherin Kleopatra im Augenblick ihres Selbstmordes. Auf das Blickmotiv der antiken Niobide für diese Affektdarstellung rekurrierend, erzeugt Renis halbfigurige Darstellung eine dramatische Nähe zum Betrachter, welche die Drastik der Verzweiflungstat zu vermitteln sucht. Tropfen frischen Blutes quellen bereits aus der Bisswunde an der entblößten Brust, die sie sich selbst mit einer Natter zugefügt hat. Reni folgt mit dieser Darstellung der Überlieferung Plutarchs, der zufolge sich die durch Ocatvian besiegte Königin 30 v.Chr. durch das Gift einer Natter das Leben nahm.Renis „Selbstmord der Kleopatra“ gehört zu einer Reihe von Gemälden, die er dem Tod der Pharaonin widmete. Eine ungefähr zeitgleiche Variante findet sich in der Royal Collection auf Schloss Windsor, spätere Kompositionen im Palazzo Pitti in Florenz sowie der Galeria Capitolina in Rom. Darüber hinaus beschäftigte sich Reni auch in andere Form mit dem Motiv des Freitodes. Eine Variante ist der „Selbstmord der Lucretia“, die sich seit 1768 in der Sammlung Friedrich II. befindet. Das Gemälde „Selbstmord der Kleopatra“ wurde bereits 1756 von Friedrich II. aus der Sammlung des Duc de Tallard durch den Pariser Handelsagenten Louis-François Mettra erworben. Dieser Kauf steht exemplarisch für Friedrichs Bestreben ab den 1750er Jahren, schwerpunktmäßig Maler der Hochrenaissance sowie des Barock aus den Niederlanden und Italien zu sammeln. Zuvor richtete sich sein Interessestärker auf französische Werke. Befindet sich derzeit im Neues Palais Franziska Ratajczak
