Description

"A TYPICAL SOUTH AFRICAN RESIDENCE.

Groote Schuur. the country house of the Right Hon. Cecil Rhodes, which is here represented, was unfortunately partially destroyed by fire towards the end of 1896. but the work of rebuilding the mansion was at once undertaken. The residence in its original state has been selected for illustration, as being a fine specimen of the old Dutch style of domestic architecture. Situate at Rondebosch, a few miles out of Capetown, and built chiefly of teak timber, it once belonged to the ancestors of Mr. Hofmeyr. but was enlarged and improved by Mr. Rhodes, who filled it with things of beauty and rare curiosities. It stands in a spacious park containing an uncommonly fine zoological collection, which includes almost every non-carnivorous animal belonging to South Africa, as well as many from other parts of the world."
