English: Artist Robin Day painted the Libyan Desert on 14 September 1943.
Kay, who has been described as a Second World War soldier, historian and artist, painted many watercolour scenes from the Middle East theatre of war. Archives New Zealand holds 21 of his works as part of the National Collection of War Art. He was the official archivist while stationed in the Middle East and went on write several official histories for the War History Branch.
