DescriptionRochford, The Women's Institute, West Street - geograph.org.uk - 921907.jpg
English: Rochford: The Women's Institute, West Street The building with the clock is now used by the WI, but was built in 1866 as Rochford's Corn Exchange. The clock commemorates Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee of 1897, and, I am pleased to relate, was telling the correct time when the photograph was taken. The building fell into disuse around the beginning of the First World War, but appears to have been taken up by the WI during the Second World War. The building beyond is Barclays Bank.
The Womens Institute was formed in 1915 with two purposes, firstly to revitalise rural communities and secondly to encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War.
