The Rwamwanja refugee settlement was originally opened for Rwandan refugees in 1964, and closed in 1995. It was opened again in 2013 in response to the latest influx of refugees due to the ongoing conflict in DRC. It can accomodate up to 50-55,000 people, and is currently home to 36,000.
Rwamwanja is hosting Uganda's national celebration of World Refugee Day on 20 June 2013. World Refugee Day was established by the United Nations in 2000, to honour the courage, strength and determination of women, men and children forced to flee their homes under threat of persecution, conflict and violence.
