Summary

Description Project HOPE's hospital ship, the S.S. Hope on 16 September 1964. The SS Hope had originally been in service as the U.S. Navy hospital ship USS Consolation (AH-15) between 1945 and 1955. On 16 March 1960 she was chartered to the "People to People Health Foundation" and renamed SS Hope, an acronym for "Health Opportunity for People Everywhere". She sailed later in 1960 on her first cruise to bring modern medical treatment and training to underdeveloped areas of the world and served in this capacity for fourteen years, until 1974.
