DescriptionSalwick 1 railway station 2059854 7f01ffe1.jpg
English: Salwick Station, with trains racing.
View eastwards, towards Preston; ex-London & North Western & Lancashire & Yorkshire (Preston & Wyre) Joint lines, Preston - Blackpool/Fleetwood. The four-track stretch between Preston and Kirkham & Wesham was so busy on a Summer Saturday that all four tracks were in constant use. That day, in the 260 minutes I was there 142 expresses - all except three being steam-hauled - passed Salwick, i.e. one every 1.8 minutes! Here, two Down expresses (not identified) are deliberately racing as they pass Salwick station towards the junctions at Kirkham: on the left Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 No. 44671 heads M579 (from the Midland Division); on the right B1 4-6-0 No. 61281 is on an Eastern Region express, possibly from Hull; both would have come via Manchester.
