DescriptionSandy the Robber Fly (Proctacanthus sp.) (6110699298).jpg
This is my friend Sandy, a very hirsute robber fly who patrols the trails at Juno Dunes with a great deal of buzzing & drama! His antics are fun to watch and he is very amiable but if you tried to grab him, he could bite :-)
Sandy was identified as Proctacanthus fulviventris by Bugguide.net.
These spend a lot of time on the ground along the sandy trails throughout the dunes.
Robber flies catch prey on the wing, even larger predators, and stab them with their proboscis, injecting saliva containing neurotoxic and proteolytic enzymes that essentially turn the prey's insides into a nutritious smoothie.
