English: Sarrusophone, bass in B flat, metal, probably originally brass painted gold, keyed and stopped double reed instrument designed to replace oboes and bassoons in military bands 1 bass sarrusophone in Bb Gautrot-Marquet, Paris, France, circa 1875 brass, overall length 890 mm engraved ‘Gautrot-Marquet - breveté s.g.d.g. à Paris - GM - 501’ 1998.60.132 Castle 206 (presented Crump) The sarrusophone family was invented in 1856 by the French bandmaster Sarrus, as a louder replacement of oboes and bassoons in the wind band. They had a conical bore and used a double reed. The family was parallel to the saxophones in pitch ranging form a straight soprano in B flat through to a contrabass in E flat. The main surviving instruments are the bass and contrabass models.
