Description |
Solomon Alexander Hart was the first Jewish member of the Royal Academy in London. He was also their Librarian. As a boy Hart was not allowed to attend Plymouth grammar school because of his faith, so he was schooled in Exeter. Hart’s father wanted him to become an engraver but could not afford the premium. One engraver did offer him a position without this fee but on the condition that he served for 7 years and worked 12 hour days; Hart declined. |
