Manes was tanned and stuffed, / Thus Ben and la Clara a Milano / by the heels at Milano / That maggots shd/ eat the dead bullock / Diagonos ... but the twice crucified / where in history will you find it? It is an historically significant image showing part of The Pisan Cantos, written in circumstances much discussed by secondary sources. That it was started on a sheet of toilet paper suggests that Pound created it in the steel cage where he was being held on a charge of treason in an American military camp in Pisa, Italy, after the Second World War.
