English: A unique 19th-century silver jar from Pune, Maharashtra in the collection of Zapurza Museum of Art & Culture, Pune.
The surface of the jar is covered with five scenes executed in high relief from the Hindu epics, based upon the compositions by Raja Ravi Varma (1848-1906). The scenes are inspired by the oleograph prints produced by Ravi Varma Press, which include Shesh Narayan, Vanvasi Ram, Sita Bhumi Pravesh, The Victory of Indrajit and Kansa Maya. The lid is surmounted by a figure of Lord Hanuman kneeling on a bed of leaves. On the register below it, there are eight figureheads surrounded by dense floral patterns. The circular foot of the jar is decorated with animals and mythological beasts. The jar's distinctive design is typical of the silver produced in Pune towards the end of the 19th-century.
