DescriptionSoldier Mans Starstreak HVM High Velocity Missile System During Exercise Olympic Guardian for London 2012 MOD 45153958.jpg
English: The Starstreak HVM (High Velocity Missile) is designed to counter threats from very high performance, low-flying aircraft and fast 'pop up' strikes by helicopter attacks.
Exercise Olympic Guardian is a large-scale security exercise to enable the military to prepare for the key role it will play during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
One option being considered is the deployment of surface-to-air missiles at key sites. Blackheath is one of a number of locations where Ground Based Air Defence system may be placed as part of the Air Security Plan for the 2012 Games. The Ground Based Air Defence systems known as Rapier and HVM, provide extra surveillance over the Olympic park, to detect unauthorised aircraft. As a last resort they can be used against threatening aircraft.
