South Australian Railways 700 class locomotive no 700 about 1932.

A railway historian at the National Railway Museum, Port Adelaide, has stated "The photo was taken with a long exposure and with coupling rods lowered in the manner of a builder's photo. Removal of background detail, characteristic of such images, has been undertaken to an exceptionally high standard. Yet the locomotive is not new but in poorly maintained condition. This would suggest that the photo was taken as a training exercise to develop skills in removing background, during the Great Depression when the South Australian government was in financial peril and the railways badly run down, and before locomotive buffers were removed about 1934–35."
