editSeal of Bishop Thomas de Cantilupe (1220-1282), Bishop of Hereford 1275-death, canonised 1320. Legend: TOMAS DEI GRATIA HEREFORDENSIS EP(ISCOPU)S (Thomas by the grace of God Bishop of Hereford). He stands on a wolf (Latin lupus), a canting charge seen on pre-heraldic seals of the Cantilupe family (See Cantilupe seals discussed in M Julian-Jones, Thesis on de Cantilupe and Corbet families, 2015, Online Research @Cardiff (ORCA), Cardiff University[1]). Cantilupe family armorials and the development of the Jessant-de-lys armorial charge; Also essential in a biographical article on Thomas de Cantilupe as no other image of him survives except this unique seal.
