Summary

Description

The church is built from local sandstone with tiled roofs, and dates from the early 14th century, although there were probably churches on the site before that. The west tower is perpendicular with four octagonal crocketted pinnacles and carved faces around the string course at the top. There are eight bells. The nave has a 4 bay arcade of early 14th century octagonal columns with pointed arches. The chancel has north and south chapels separated by a two bay arcade. In 1516 Sir Robert Reid enlarged the north Chapel to its present size and founded a Chantry. In 1624 the church was struck by lightning and caught fire, the extensive damage was not repaired until 1629 when the church was re-consecrated. A south porch was added. The nave roof was rebuilt with a flatter pitch, which can be seen on the side of the tower. The south wall of the south aisle was also rebuilt following the fire. Some of the earlier stonework may have been salvaged. There were two minor restorations in the Victorian era, the reredos was erected in 1866 and the seating revised. A chapel/meeting room was built at the base of the tower in 1978.

The font dates from 1628 with an elaborate cover. The pulpit dates from the same period. The chancel has an altar tomb from 1650 to Frances Reeve of London and her two husbands.

The church has a large collection of hatchments, and there is a elaborate brass chandelier from 1726, similar to the one at Sundridge. Most of the stained-glass is Victorian. The organ is by T. C. Lewis from circa 1868 and was upgraded by Walker in 1968.

The churchyard has a vault of the Streetfeild family with a small building from the 18th century inside of which a flight of steps to the vault which contains some 15 coffins.
