Summary
DescriptionSt Mary's church - pulpit - geograph.org.uk - 836873.jpg |
English: St Mary's church - pulpit Victorian pulpit of white stone and alabaster, a memorial to Henry Styleman le Strange from parishioners.
St Mary's church, situated in the grounds of Hunstanton Hall, is one of the largest churches in the area > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/836806 - https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/836860. It was built by Sir Hamon le Strange in about 1300 and has the unusual feature of having its tower now located at the western corner of the north aisle (indicating that the present-day north aisle once used to be the original church) - a result of extensive rebuilding and restoration work during the 19th century by architect Frederick Preedy. Older survivals are the early Norman font > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/836890 and the medieval rood screen depicting the 12 apostles > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/836884 - https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/836889. An altar tomb to Henry le Strange (d. 1485) and his wife Katerine is located in a recess in the north chapel wall > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/836874 and the altar tomb at the east end of the north aisle once covered the grave of Sir Roger le Strange in the centre of the chancel > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/836882. The stained glass windows > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/836897 - https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/836900 date from the 19th century as does the carved stone pulpit (seen here). The church is open every day. For more information see: http://www.norfolkchurches.co.uk/oldhunstanton/oldhunstanton.htm |
