DescriptionStaines air crash memorial seat (40856307931).jpg
British European Airways Flight 548 was a scheduled passenger flight from London Heathrow to Brussels on 18 June 1972. It was a
Hawker Siddeley Trident 1C, registration G-ARPI.
The cause of the crash was incorrect retraction of the high-lift devices on the wing at too low a speed. The aircraft quickly entered a "deep stall" from which there could be no recovery.
Staines is less than two minutes flying time from Heathrow Airport.
My picture is of the memorial seat close to where the aircraft crashed, killing all 118 on board. Next I will upload a picture of the memorial plaque (which sits in front of the seat).
I vividly remember the crash as it came at a time when I, aged 18, was waiting to hear from BEA to see if I had been accepted as a pilot cadet.
