DescriptionStatue of Anton Bernolák on Slanica Isle.jpg
English: Anton Bernolák (1763-1813) was a Slovak linguist and Catholic priest, and the first codifier of Slovak literary language. He was born in Slanica, a village inundated in 1953, now a part of Námestovo. In 1787, he codified the first Slovak literary language, which he based on western Slovak dialects spoken around Trnava, with some elements from the central dialects. The language, called bernolákovčina, wasn't accepted as a national standard language, although it was a milestone on the way to the formation of the modern Slovak nation.
