Summary

Description
English: The umbellate inflorescence of a cultivated specimen of Strumaria truncata (Amaryllidaceae) blooming in the Davies Alpine House, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

A most attractive bulbous species native to South Africa ( the flora of Southern Africa boasts a rich diversity of genera belonging to the family Amaryllidaceae ). Strumaria species are adapted to seasonally moist conditions, flowering, in the wild, with the coming of the Autumn rains. Kew’s Alpine house has recently showcased several Strumaria species.

By circulating containerised specimens of alpines, as they come into and out of flower, Kew’s garden staff are able to create year-round displays of alpine plants, at the peak of floral perfection, in a suitably well-ventilated micro-climate mimicking a high-altitude environment.
