Summary

Description
English: DR-1, one of 3 antennas of the AN/FPS-50 surveillance radar of the US Air Force Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS) site II at Clear, Alaska. Built in 1961 in the Cold War and closed in 2001, BMEWS was an arctic-based system of radars and computers to detect a nuclear ICBM attack on the US from Russia over the North Pole. It's extreme northern location was designed to give an early enough warning (15 - 30 minutes) that US missiles could be launched and bombers could take off, reducing the chance of a preemptive nuclear strike on the US.
