The centenary of the appointment of Marshal Foch as Supreme Allied Commander at the Foch Statue in Victoria in London. A memorial service took place at Lower Grosvenor Gardens on Monday 26th March 2018 to commemorate the centenary of the appointment of Marshal Ferdinand Foch as Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Armies during the First World War. The French Officer successfully coordinated the British, French, American and Italian efforts into a coherent plan during the Great War, and in recognition of this is honoured with a statue in the Lower Grosvenor Gardens. The Band of the Irish Guards provided musical accompaniment to the event, which was attended by The Right Honourable Matt Hancock MP (Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport), Mrs Geneviève Darrieussecq (Minister of State for Defence with responsibility for Remembrance and Veterans, the Government of France), Lieutenant Colonel Éric Bécourt-Foch (great-grandson of Marshal Foch), The Right Honourable the Lord Astor of Hever (grandson of Field Marshal Douglas Haig) as well as senior British military Officers, members of the 35e Régiment d’Artillerie Parachutiste and military representatives from other Allied nations. Through the appointment of a Supreme Commander, the Allied forces were finally able to coordinate their efforts which undoubtedly led to the eventual signing of the Armistice and peace. In 1919 Marshal Foch was appointed a British Field Marshal in recognition of his wartime achievements. He was also awarded the Order of Merit, Honorary Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath as well as a Distinguished Service Order.
