A few years later they had a third inwhat became Alexandria (Mount Pleasant).The first mentioned was called Bethlehemand Upper Bethlehem, the second LowerBethlehem, and the third the Log MeetingHouse Congregation. Whether the town-ship derived its name from the Churches, orwhether they were so called from that of thetownship, cannot be determined ; but proba-bilities favor the former. The autonomy ofthese pioneer congregations in their earlystruggles was subjected to several varia-tions. They were sometimes associatedunder one pastorate and represented in theChurch judicatories by one lay delegate,and sometimes were separate and independ-ent of each other. According to Rev. Mr.Webster, the historian of the PresbyterianChurches in this Country prior to 1760,Bethlehem in Hunterdon County was avacancy in the Presbytery of Philadelphiain 1736.
