camping ground.Here we turned at right angles, to theleft, and marched four miles upstreamand camped near the base of what wethought was a pass to the north. Tom L,usk went up the valley to lo-cate the trail for the next days march,but came back an hour later and saidthere was only the faintest kind of atrail a mile above camp, while a littlefarther on it totally disappeared. Withour field-glasses we could see no sign ofa trail on the pass ahead, and, as weknew from the previous days climbthat this was the only possible outlet, itseemed that we had marched into a blind valley, or cul-de-sac. Indiantrails rarely ascend such valleys unlessthe region is exceptionally good forgame. After this discouraging news Iset out to learn a little more, if possi-ble, and, instead of following the val-ley, commenced a gradual ascent of theslopes on the east. Exploration in the Canadian Rockies 87 lakes which Tom said he had seen at theend of our valley. Though I went onfor another half hour, I could not seethe other lake, owing to an exasperatingridge which remained in the way. Itwas now so late that I was forced to re-turn by way of the valley. The lake isapparently very beautiful, as four highconnected peaks lie behind it and areflanked by glaciers at their bases. The dogs. It seems remarkable that themountain plants and delicate flowersare not injured by temperatures belowthe actual freezing point, not only here,at altitudes of 6,ooo feet, but even 2,500feet higher, at the upper limit of plantlife, where the cold is far more severe.For the first time on our trip a retreatwas necessary, and we marched rapidlyback to the junction of the two streams.
