DescriptionThe driver's cab of the SQM locomotive E651 built in 2009.jpg
English: In the north of Chile the nitrate mines around Maria Elena led to the port of Tocopilla. While the first part to Barilles was mastered by diesel locomotives on the relatively flat terrain, a spectacular line from Barilles led about 1000 meters of altitude down to the sea. In order to be able to handle the loads here, the trains were hauled and an electric locomotive (1500V DC) took over the traction.
The railroad dates back to 1927 and the original locomotives were used until the closure of operations in 2015. The new locomotives visible here were all delivered in 2009, but showed many faults and problems. This may also be due to the fact that rails and electrification date from the year of foundation and were in a correspondingly poor condition.
In 2015 the railroad was closed down after severe weather damage and the transport was shifted to the road.
