venson and Carson, on theriver-bank above Cascade Locks, are visited fortheir mineral springs. Campers and mountainclimbers turn off the highroad here for GovernmentHot Springs, situated in the foothills of the Cas-cades. Tourist interest on the Washington sideof the river centres about the rapids over-lookedby the riven abutment of the Bridge of the Gods,and historically notable for the existence here ofSheridans block house on the scene of his firstbattle. White Salmon is a station opposite Hood River,portal to Mt. Hood. A ferry serves the twotowns, each of which is a distributing-point forthe bountiful fruit products of valleys leadingdown to the main river highway. Vistas of theColumbias channel and its guardian peaks areespecially fine from the Hood View road onthe bluffs above the outlet of the White SalmonRiver. Two admirable inns offer hospitality amidthese delightful surroundings. The chief scenic tour in southern Washington isthe 100-mile circuit which begins at White Salmon

SOUTHWEST COUNTIES 239 in sight of the Columbia, passes up the verdantWhite Salmon Valley, and touches Trout Lake,Glenwood and the timber limit on Mt. Adams be-fore looping back toward the great river thatflows below Mt. Hood. Trout Lake (25 m.) isthe centre of a hilly Eden much in favour withWaltonians, and numbers among other near-byattractions a group of strange caverns formed ofice and lava, which are situated near the base ofMt. Adams. Glenwood, a dozen miles from thelake, is but an hours ride by motor from thesnow line of the great volcano, which stands back50 miles from the Columbia on an even range eastfrom St. Helens. Adams approximates within2000 feet the elevation of Rainier, but is of laterdate geologically. Its cauldron has not yet cooled,as steam issuing from the depressed cone givesevidence.
