Deutsch: Anlässlich von Mommsens 80. Geburtstag wurde Lenbach von Freunden des Historikers mit einem Porträt des Gelehrten beauftragt als Geschenk für diesen selbst und dessen Familie. Von den 1897 entstandenen zwei Versionen (Brust- und Kniestück) wurde von den Auftraggebern die größere für Mommsen ausgewählt. Beide Versionen sind jeweils in zwei Fassungen vorhanden. Im Unterschied zum Marbacher Exemplar zeigt das zweite Bruststück (heute Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus München) Mommsen im Dreiviertelprofil nach rechts und mit Brille. Das Münchner Exemplar hat Lenbach vermutlich für seine "Galerie berühmter Zeitgenossen" gemalt und bei sich ausgestellt.
