Summary

Description
English: Three Princes of the Kingdom of Hawaii attended, St. Matthews Hall, the Episcopal military school of St. Matthew's Church, founded by Revered Brewer in 1865 in San Mateo, California. (That school now thrives as St. Matthew's Episcopal Day School.) The princes attended from 1883-1887. They are Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole (left, 1871–1922), David Kawānanakoa (center, 1868–1908) and Edward Abnel Keliʻiahonui (right 1869–1887). On Sunday July 19, 1885, in Santa Cruz, "the young Hawaiian princes were in the water (at the mouth of the San Lorenzo), enjoying it hugely and giving interesting exhibitions of surf-board swimming as practiced in their native islands". (Beach Breezes: July 20, 1885, The Daily Surf, Santa Cruz, CA.) As such, they were the first to bring surfing to mainland America.
