Summary

Description
English: Tigawa Hindu temple is located between Katni and Jabalpur, in Tigawa (Tigwan) village. The site is located near the Kaimur range running along SW-NE axis, and a water reservoir. There are hills to its north as well. In 1870s, the site had nearly 36 Hindu temples, all of which except one large one were demolished by a contractor for their square rocks thought easy quarry for building a railway line. The villagers went to the British India Commissioner that the demolition of the temples be stopped. By the time Alexander Cunningham knew, 200 carts of temple stones and artwork had been hauled away. Only the foundation of the temples were left and one solitary temple made of stones and blocks not suited for railway construction. The left over Kankali Devi temple is now dated to 400-425 CE, Gupta Empire era with panels on Vishnu and Shakti Devis. It is a crucial link to the archaeological studies of ancient Indian architecture. Plate VIII of the source, published in 1879.
