Summary

Author
Dickinson Brothers, London
Description
English: 'Traktir Bridge after the Battle of Tchernaya'.

Lithograph from 'The Officers Portfolio of the Striking Reminiscences of the War', a collection of 20 coloured lithographs 'From Drawings, Photographs, and Notes, Taken on the Spot, Made into Complete Pictures by Eminent Artists', published by Dickinson Brothers, London, 1856 (c).

The Battle of the Tchernaya was the final attempt made by the Russians to break the siege of Sevastopol during the Crimean War (1854-1856). By August 1855 the defenders of the town were suffering such heavy casualties from the Allied bombardment that the effort could no longer be delayed. The Russian attack, however, was bloodily repulsed by the French, assisted by the Sardinian Army.
