Description NH 108357: USS Rodgers (1881-1881) In port, prior to her mid-June 1881 departure for the Arctic Ocean. U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph. On 30 Nov 1881, USS Rodgers, commanded by R. M. Berry, was destroyed by a fire at St. Lawrence Bay on the Siberian coast. Before the fire, Rodgers had charted Wrangel Island, proving conclusively that it was not part of the Asian continent. Rodgers crew eventually departed St. Lawrence Bay on board the whaler North Star in 1882.
