Находился в галерее войсковых атаманов Ефремовского дворца, Старочеркасском женском Ефремовском монастыре, Музее им. Степана Разина.


Василий Иванович Иловайский — родной брат знаменитого войскового атамана Алексея Ивановича Иловайского, полковник Войска Донского, был награжден большой золотой медалью за битву при Дунае в войне с турками.


Имя портретируемого уточнено на основе упоминания портрета в журнале «Дон» 1887 года и по архивным документам. Химико-технологические исследования подтвердили стилевое единство портрета с произведениями кисти неизвестного донского художника второй половины XVIII века — автора портретов Авдотьи Акимовны, Данилы Степановича, Меланьи Карповны Ефремовых и брата В.И. Иловайского — войскового атамана Алексея Ивановича Иловайского.
