'In 1865/6 the first permanent communications link between Europe and America was initiated here with the landing of the transatlantic telegraph cable. Four more cables from Telegraph Field opposite this site were laid between Foilhammerum Bay, Valentia Is. and Heart's Content, New Foundland, with connecting cables to Penzance, Cornwall and Emden, Germany.'
