Notes John W. Ross, commissioner of the District of Columbia, was born in Lewistown, Illinois, June 23, 1841. He attended private schools in Lewistown, and took a four years' course at the Illinois College, and one year at the Harvard Law School. He was admitted to the bar, upon examinationin open Supreme Court, at Springfield, in lsoti, and was elected as a Democrat to the Illinois Legislature in 1868, and again in 1870. He removed to Washington in 1873 and since that time has resided here, and has been engaged most of the time in the practice of the law. He was appointed trustee of the public schools of the District of Columbia in 1886, and served three years as president of the school board, and until appointed commissioner of the District of Columbia. He was appointed postmaster of the city of Washington by President Cleveland, and qualified February 1, 1888, and served in that capacity until October 1, 1890, when he was appointed by President Harrison commissioner of the District of Columbia.
