English: Tomb chest in Bradfield Chapel, north aisle, Uffculme Church, Devon, probably of William Walrond (1610-1669), shown at left below a cartouche with the Walrond arms, husband of Ursula Specott, sister of Humphrey Specott of Launcells in Cornwall. The arms above the figure on the right are those of Specott (Or, on a bend gules three millrinds of the first) and the ostensibly female person sculpted below, who seems to have acquired a beard, therefore appears to be his wife. Five standing female figures are shown, at the west end, a blindfolded Justice, also Faith Hope & Charity (per Pevsner). The chest tomb is complete in itself, and the half-figures presently placed on top of it belong to a former now broken up monument, probably that of the reclining Sir William Walrond (d.1689), whose effigy now occupied the window-ledge above. On the top slab is inscribed: "This lowe built chamber to each obvious (i.e. passing eye, from Latin ob + via, "in the way") eye / Seemes like a little chapell where he lye / Here in this tumbe my flesh shall rest in hope / When ere I dye this is my aime & scope". On the front edge of the top slab is written: "1663 ffalax saepe fides; testam. vota peribunt; constitues tumulum si sapis ipse tuum fulim? 1663" (faith often fails, testamentary vows perish, build a mound if you ....) Other arms quartered with Walrond are: left, Two grosing irons in saltire between four Kelway pears a bordure engrailed (Kelloway); right: Per fesse argent and azure, three chaplets counterchanged (Duke, of Otterton, the family of the wife of Humphry walrond of Ottery St Mary (d.1637), younger brother of William III Walrond (d.1627) of Bradfield). The central escutcheon, possibly erroneously repainted, should perhaps show Walrond impaling Argent, a chevron between three lambs sable (Sydenham, the family of William Walrond's mother) At present it shows Argent, a chevron between three birds sable
