First, I've started 4 Xnest-Servers in four terminal emulators (like xterm, aterm):

Xnest :1 -ac -geometry 640x480+1+1 &
Xnest :2 -ac -geometry 640x480+1+1 &
Xnest :3 -ac -geometry 640x480+1+1 &
Xnest :4 -ac -geometry 640x480+1+1 &

After moving them to the correct position you get a field of 4 X-Servers with a screen resolution of 640x480 and all host-based access control mechanisms disabled (-ac switch).

Now I've started Xdmx to get one big display. At first, I've set up a config file (because the layout is too complex):

}

Now starting Xdmx with the Xinerama-extension...

Xdmx :10 -configfile /tmp/conf -config example +xinerama

That's it. Now you can set the background (selfmade, public domain), start a window manager (twm), start Openoffice.org.
