DescriptionXx0960 - Australian Paralympic Team athletes disembark from plane - 3a - Scan.jpg
English: Australian Paralympic Team disembark from their plane on arrival in Rome for the 1960 Rome Paralympic Games. At the bottom of the stairs team official John "Johnno" Johnston in a white gap, turns towards the camera to talk to Bill Mather-Brown, on crutches. At the time of this photo, it was thought beneficial even for people with paraplegia to use crutches and leg calipers to stand and even 'walk'. (Mather-Brown, however, had polio, and so had some movement and control in his legs.)

Members of the first Australian Paralympic Team, in Rome in 1960, disembark from a plane at Rome airport at the end of their journey to the Games. The team contained a mixture of athletes with polio and those with spinal cord injuries. In general, those with paraplegia were lifted from the plane and those with polio used the steps. Team physiotherapist "Johnno" Johnston (white cap) stands at the bottom of the stairs and looks at Bill Mather-Brown, who approaches him.
