Roughley14 February 1936American novelist and angler Zane Grey (1872-1939) visited Australia in January 1936 and set up camp at Bermagui on the NSW south coast to pursue his love of big game fishing. Although remote, Bermagui was recognised as among the worlds best game fishing locations as early as the 1930s. Black, Blue and Striped Marlin of record size pursue the baitfish which congregate in the area during summer months. Marlin are the most prized of all game fishing species, renown for their size and speed, but mostly for the acrobatic aerial display they produce once hooked. Grey was Patron of the Bermagui Sport Fishing Association from 1936 to 1937 and Bermagui’s caravan park was renamed Bermagui Zane Grey Tourist Park in his honour. He also fished at other locations in Australia including the Great Barrier Reef where he made the film White Death in which he had a starring role playing himself. He recounted his Australian experiences in his book An American Angler in Australia (1937).
