The gentleman on the left is Adams written as "Ahadamusu" in katakana in the box to his bottom right. The middle is probably Perry in katakana "Mashiteuse peruri". The man on the right would be Anan "Anan". I am not sure what the kanji says...

I'm reading マツテウセベルリ ("Matsuteuse Beruri"). Now, I'm far, far from being any kind of expert. Maybe sokuon wasn't written smaller back then, so perhaps it should be transcribed as "Matteuse". Just speculating here. --Drabant (talk) 12:11, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

Note that Perry was a commodore (a senior captain), not an Admiral. The file is misnamed.

teitoku can be translated to both admiral and commodore, so it should probably be considered a translation error. --Drabant (talk) 12:13, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
