Croatia

The map claims that the state was subordinated to the Byzantine empire in 1045, yet there is virtually no strong proof to support this. In particular, the historian Fine implies that the empire had already relinquished Croatia after the death of Basil II (1019-1025). Some primary sources also contradict the map such as various religious establishments by the Croatian king (which reflect upon his independence) and his intentions of conquering the dalmatian cities by force from Venice for which the Byzantine emperor had the kings' cousin imprisoned during his brief stay in Constantinople. Also, suzerainty means that a more powerful entity controls the country's foreign affairs. The Croatian king cooperated with Peter of Hungary, to regain Dalmatia from Venice (a Byzantine vassal), and yet also allied with a dignitary to overthrow the German emperor. Seems like a pretty independent fellow. Although he did ally himself with the empire a couple of times. Er-vet-en (say) 13:15, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
